Another Successful Fishing Derby

More than 150 adults and children enjoyed a picture-perfect day ice fishing on Robinson Pond recently as the Hudson Kiwanis conducted its 30th annual fishing derby.  “This year was especially large due to the great weather,” said Jim Woosley, Kiwanis member and derby organizer.

Children and adults competed in three categories to hook the biggest fish.  The adult fishermen who won in the categories of pickerel, perch, and crappies were awarded $50.  Those coming in second and third earned $30 and $20 respectively.  In the children’s divisions, the grand prize winners won trophies.

The anglers were required to drill or chip holes in the 15-inch thick ice.  While some drove their vehicles onto the ice, others erected shacks, tents and shanties. The day started off with snow in the air, but sun won out with blue sky and light winds by noon.

Many came prepared with snow mobiles of four wheelers, pulling carts, trailers, or even houses onto the pond. The kids entertained themselves throughout the day building snow forts and igloos around their fishing holes.

The largest fish this year ranged close to 16-inches. "Sometimes they are difficult to pin down because they don't stay still", lamented Jim Carlen, official fish measurer this year.

"We've been coming every year for a long time now," mentioned one proud dad.

“We are especially thankful for all the support we have received for our annual event,” Woosley said.  “Each year we raise money through events like this, which we give to many local causes, including high school scholarships. The fishing derby is a fun way to spend the day with the family, and enjoy the outdoors in our little town.”

Mike and Carol Hardy and the Key Club cooked and served the annual chili, hot dogs, and hot chocolate to the crowd.

At 1PM, all the anxious children gathered for the trophy and prize presentations. The most often question heard throughout the day was “Is it the biggest?” by many if the kids waiting to see if their fish won the prize.
