Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute

Key Clubs Visit Kiwanis

Pediatric Trauma Institute 2017

The Key Clubs from Alvirne and Campbell High Schools recently enjoyed an informational and heartfelt tour of the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute.  The tour encompasses the many services provided for children that are in need of recovery from traumatic injury and requiring immediate care.  It also includes a visit to the helipad where the med flight helicopters land and expedite the specialized care.  There are also many speakers including ER doctors, nurses and ambulance drivers.   This year there was a young girl that suffered a severe concussion.  She was there with her mother and spoke of how KPTI saved her from this “invisible injury:.

In 1981 the Boston Floating Hospital partnered with New England Kiwanis to make the first advanced Pediatric Trauma facility in the country and continues to be one of the most advanced in the world.  Until then, children were treated with adult sized equipment that did not always conform to their size.  KPTI also provides safety programs that reach over 33,000 families in the New England area.  You might have seen the Safety Kits given out by the Key Clubs in a recent Santa’s Visit at the Lion’s Hall.

It is a tour well worth taking, especially for students going into the medical field where they see the miracle of medicine.  You can even climb in a boat in the Cam Neely hall, the playroom of the facility, or see the wall of quilts made from pieces of donated material.  The Key Clubs provide even more support every year when they visit.  This year they brought bags of new toys that they collected and made almost 40 “no-sew” quilts for the young patients.  These quilts are given to the young patients when they arrive.  The soft fleece provides not only warmth but something reassuring they can hold and keep with them. The need for these quilts became even more apparent when they were given to children right away.   A good memory from a wonderful tour.

The Alvirne High School and Campbell High School Key Clubs continue to visit KPTI yearly.
